Gas In A Jetta Diesel

Q. Help... I'm so silly... I was driving my friends 2002 VW Jetta when I noticed that the fuel needle was on the orange. I drove into a EXXON and put $10.00 worth of regular gas into it. I didn't realize that it was a diesel engine! Went down the road about ½ mile and then it just stopped on me.

It is at the mechanic right now and they said that they need to empty the tank, clear the fuel lines and replace the filter; and then they would go from there and see if there was any real damage done to the vehicle. Will I be buying a new car for my friends?

Sandy

A. Gasoline can do some serious damage to a diesel engine. It depends on how much diesel was left in the tank and how much gas was put in. Like your mechanic said, drain the tank, replace the fuel filter and keep your fingers crossed. I would say the chances are about 50 - 50.
