Ford Probe Has No Juice
Q. Dear Mr. Ciulla, My name is Andy. I own a 1990 Ford Probe GT Turbo. Just recently I started having some electrical problems. I pulled up to a stop light and all of a sudden all of my warning lights and interior lights came on and the bell that lets me know if my door is open started dinging.
It stayed like this every time the car was running. After about three days, the battery went dead. After jump starting it and charging it, the battery still died with in a few minutes while it was running. I am guessing that I have a short some where, but I have no idea where. I checked my stereo, but nothing changed. I am hoping that you might have some advice or know what the problem is.
Sincerely,
AndyA. The first thing to do is have the charging system completely tested. What it sounds like to me is the alternator stopped charging and the vehicle was running off the battery. When the battery started getting weak, there was not enough power to run everything so things started going crazy. The battery got to the point where it hasn't enough charge to start the vehicle and keep it running.
If the charging system should check out okay, the next thing to look at is the door switches for the interior lights and warning chimes.
