Ford F-250 Speedometer Is Sticking
Q. I have a 1977 Ford F-250. I just replaced the speedometer cable and now the speedometer is sticking. Is there a way to keep it from do this? Do I need a new one? I hope you can help me.
Thank you,
ClayA. First thing you need to do is check the speedometer cable routing. There should not be any sharp turns or kinks in the cable. If there are you need to ease them out. The reason they are so long is to allow for long, sweeping turns.
If the speedometer cable routing is okay, you can remove the internal cable from the housing. Clean it with carburetor or brake cleaner and, as you slide it back into the housing, coat the cable with Vaseline® to lubricate it.
If the speedometer still jumps around, you may have a bad speedometer head.
