Civic Ignition Switch

Q. I have a 1991 Honda Civic sedan. I am able to start and turn-off the vehicle, but I am unable to remove they key from the ignition. I understand I must remove the key assembly to repair this, but how do I do that?

Thanks.

A. Okay, here's what you have to do:

  1. On models equipped with airbag, disarm airbag.
  2. On all models, disconnect battery ground cable.
  3. On Accord and Prelude models, remove steering wheel and steering column lower cover.
  4. On Civic CRX, Civic and Civic Wagon, remove dashboard lower panel and steering column lower cover.
  5. On Civic and Civic Wagon models, remove dashboard lower panel, left knee bolster and steering column lower cover.
  6. On all models, disconnect ignition switch electrical connector from dash fuse box.
  7. Insert key and place in the "LOCK" or "O" position.
  8. Remove two switch set screws, then the switch.
  9. Position suitable punch into hole on lock cylinder housing and depress pin, then remove lock cylinder from housing.
  10. Reverse procedure to install.
  11. Rearm airbag, if equipped.
