Chrysler Lebaron Downshifting

Q. My Aunt has a 1993 Chrysler Lebaron Convertible, 3.0 liter engine, 127,000 and automatic transmission. I borrowed it while my van was down. I told her about what it was doing, she does not quite understand for she is Japanese. While driving it, it will downshift into low gear! It will not return to normal gear unless, I turn the car off, and let it sit for a moment!

It does not always do this, but it does it quite often! Any suggestions?

Thank you very much,
Becky

A. It sounds like it is going into "limp-in mode". You need to check the computer to see what codes are stored. You need a scan tool to access these codes. It is probably a shift solenoid that is bad.

Since it is intermittent, it could be a sticking valve in the transmission valve body. I would giving a transmission fluid and filter change a try before anything else.
