Mitsubishi Galant Stalls When Slowing

Q. Vincent: I have a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant ES. It has about 116,000 miles. The problem is when the car goes below 1,000 rpm when is stop, in a traffic light, or just parked, it just shuts off. There is no hesitation, no back firing, no other symptoms. In high idle or rpm, runs just fine. Is this a problem with the alternator??? I hope to hear from you.

Thanks,
Tony

Mitsubishi Galant Stalls When Slowing

A. In cases such as this, the ignition system, air/fuel mixture or Idle Air Control (IAC) motor may be faulty. In addition, if the engine suddenly stalls, the cause may also be a loose connector. The most likely causes for this are:

  • Malfunction of the ignition system.
  • Malfunction of air/fuel ratio control system.
  • Malfunction of the IAC system or motor.
  • Vacuum leak.
  • Improper connector contact.
  • Bad Coolant Temperature Sensor.

One thing you can try before anything else is to give the throttle body and IAC motor a good cleaning.
