Replacing Fox A/C Belt
Q. I have a 1990 VW Fox, fuel injected with A/C also a 4 speed. I recently had to replace a broken alternator belt, which required me cutting off the A/C Compressor belt. (It was old and worn also) I cannot seem to figure out how to get the A/C Belt back on though as the compressor has only 4 bolts that it mounts to the engine with, and no way to adjust it in or out like the alternator.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much.
EricA. You have a weird adjusting system on that A/C compressor. That has an split pulley on the crankshaft. To replace and adjust the air conditioning compressor V-belt you split the crankshaft pulley and add or subtract adjusting shims between the two portions of the crankshaft's split pulley. The front half of the split pulley must be removed before the air conditioning V-belt can be installed.
When removing the air conditioning V-belt, note the position and number of adjusting shims so that they can be reinstalled in the same order. Adjusting shims are available in various thicknesses from a Volkswagen dealer.
