Chrysler Sebring JXI Front Struts

Q. Hi Vince, Thanks to your web site I now know why my oil pressure light keeps coming on when I come to a stop. Now the other tip I am looking for, I have a 1998 Chrysler Sebring JXI Limited Convertible, V-6, automatic transmission, 66,000 miles, ABS and A/C. It is getting a little bouncy up in front, and when I push down the front end, it doesn't come up as smooth as it should.

I guess I need new struts. I know on some cars it can be done by the average joe, but on some cars it can't. Is it really difficult on this car to replace the struts? If I have to unhook the front end from the springs, then I think it will be too much for me to handle on my own. I am pretty handy, but certainly not a car expert. What are your thoughts on the job?

Thanks!
Scott

A. It is not a very difficult job, but it does involve removing the strut from the car and compressing the spring. This can be very dangerous if not done correctly. I have seen mechanics get seriously injured doing this.

You can rent a spring compressor from a rental center. If you decide to try it, the Chiltons manual has the detailed procedure. Or you can go to the public library and look it up in the Motors Manuals. If you think you are up to the challenge, go for it. Just treat that spring with a great deal of respect and be very, very careful.
