Questions and Answers

Dodge Intrepid DTC 36, 51 And 52

Q. Hello my name is Luke. My father is a mechanic and we are trying to fix my car. It is a:

  • 1993 Dodge Intrepid
  • 3.3 liter engine
  • Automatic transmission
  • 120,000 miles
Dodge Intrepid DTC 36, 51 And 52

The problem I am having is the transmission keeps going into limp mode. I can drive for a while then it will just go into second gear. If i come to a red light and turn off then restart the car it will be fine again. I have already replaced speed sensors and the solenoid in the transmission pan and it still goes into limp mode fairly often. I did run a scanner on it and got these codes:

  • 36 - Fault immediately after a shift.
  • 51 - Speed ratio error in first.
  • 52 - Speed ratio error in third.

We have had it in to a the transmission specialty shop my dad has talked to his mechanic buddies and we have posted on numerous forums and no one seems to know what to do beyond speed sensors and solenoid. our questions are what exactly do those codes mean?

Is there anything else that could be wrong or bad? are there any other parts that could need replacing? Any information you could give we would really appreciate. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Luke

A. These codes indicate a slipping transmission. Specifically, code 51 indicates slip in the Low/Reverse clutch pack and code 52 slip in the 2-4 clutch pack.

I'm afraid, according to these codes, you are looking at an overhaul.
