Storing A Honda Prelude SI
Q. I'm sure you're very busy but if you have time to answer me I really would appreciate it. I have a 1989 Honda Prelude SI 5 speed and I need to store it for six months to a year and am not sure the best way to do it. Should I unhook the battery cables or just one or have someone start it on occasion?
I live in Washington State so the winters are not too bad and its covered and I have anti-freeze in it. But other than that I have had so many different suggestions but I'll trust your answer.
Thank you so much,
JulieA. Ideally if you have someone who can drive it a few miles, more than 25, once a week, that would be the best thing to do.
If you’re just going to store your car for a few months you should check the oil in the engine, transmission and differential. Make sure they are topped off and clean. You should fill the gas tank to help prevent condensation inside. You should also mount the car on jack stands or wooden blocks to prevent flat spots from forming on the tires.
Make sure the parking brake is not applied. Disconnect both of the battery cables and coat the battery posts and cable terminals with Vaseline® to prevent corrosion. The battery should be recharged every month to ensure the battery doesn't "flat" out and the car will start up when you are ready to drive it again.
If you have a long air intake nozzle, cover it with some fine mesh screen to keep critters from crawling inside and camping out on your air filter. I have taken quite a few rats nests out of air cleaner housings. Some moth balls placed on wiring harnesses will keep critters from making them lunch and are easily removed.
A good wash and wax will protect the cars finish from acid rain spotting and the car cover. Clean the inside the car of all uneaten food that may be under or between the seats. This will help keep little critters from making your car a home. If you don't mind the smell, some moth balls will keep the critters out.
That's about it. See you when you get back!!
