Broken Shifter Handle

Q. 1995 Pontiac Bonneville SE stuck shifter button (floor mounted). The button at the front of the shifter knob, on the subject vehicle, is stuck in the full in position and I can't get it to pop out. Consequently, I cannot turn the ignition key back to the full lock position and take the key out of the lock (engine and all power does shut off though). This malfunction has caused the shifter and brake pedal interlock to malfunction and I can pull the shifter handle through all of the positions on the selector (RNOD2L) without my foot on the brake pedal.

How do I remedy this situation?

A. This is an extremely tricky thing to fix. There is a spring loaded rod that pushes on that button and, obviously, something inside the shifter handle is broken. This is not something the average person at home should try to tackle. I would recommend getting it to a shop or, preferably, the dealer to take that shifter handle apart and find out what's wrong.
