Toyota Camry Sunnroof Leak Q. Vincent, My daughter has a 2000 Toyota Camry with an electric operated sunroof. When it rains or after washing the car found that the floor on the passenger side is wet: actually soaked. Traced the leak to the sunroof. It appears that the gasket may be worn since the front channel where the roof rest once closed is wet.

Also, in the right corner is a hole leading to a housing with a series of cables leading down to the underside of the dashboard. Now I am assuming that the channel should be dry. Am I correct in assuming that and also that the gasket around the sunroof needs to be replaced? If so is this a job that I can do myself? I am mechanically inclined and have tackled some pretty tricky jobs.

A. Well Bill, it depends on which roof you have. There are two, one made by TMC and the other is made by TMMK.

There is one thing they have in common and that is four roof drains. Sometimes one or two of them get clogged and the remaining drains can't keep up with the incoming water. I use an old speedometer cable core to make sure they are all clear. I used to use compressed air, but the first time I had to take a sunroof completely out to reattach a drain hose taught me that maybe compressed air is not such a good idea.

If you have the TMMK sunroof, replacing the sunroof weatherstrip shouldn't be too difficult. If you have the TMC sunroof, the whole sunroof glass was to come out. This I would suggest to a moderate to experienced DIY. Get a body manual from the public library and read the procedure. if you feel comfortable with it, then by all means go for it.
