Jeep Banging And Scraping
Q. I have a 1994 Jeep Wrangler S, 2.5 liter, manual transmission, no lift, 31x10.5" tires. The problem I am having is when starting from a stand still or going over a large dip in the road, anything that causes the rear end to drop; there is a bang, very loud if I accelerate hard, that turns into a short scraping noise coming from the passenger side rear end.
I can stand on the rear of the vehicle and jump up and down, but it doesn't replicate the noise. The exhaust moves very freely and when I shake it around, the muffler rattles slightly. Also, when I shake the exhaust it causes the manual trans. shifter to move. I'm suspecting the exhaust is hitting something it shouldn't, but what causes the scraping as I accelerate??
Also, when I'm cruising in fifth around 50-55 and just push the gas pedal down a fraction of an inch, I hear a type of metallic grinding noise coming from the rear. Could these problems be related, if so how can I fix them!!!
A. I would like at the exhaust pipes and muffler. If it is rubbing on the drive shaft or tires, there will be a mark. I would also look at the transmission and differential mounts and see if the are broken.
