Celebrity Random Starting and Running

Q. Mr. Ciulla, I have a 1987 Chevy Celebrity Eurosport, 2.8 Multiport Fuel Injection, with an automatic transmission and approximately 172,000 miles. Recently I've encountered a random problem with the car starting and running.

It seems to take a while for it to start. Then once a few minutes have passed we can hear a pulsating noise somewhere in the engine. After it finally does start at stop lights it loses its power and shuts off. We've changed the ECM and we've noticed no change. The car's computer is giving us a trouble code of 43 which is a knock sensor circuit. My first question is could this particular sensor be the sole problem and if so where exactly is it located?

A. It's unlikely that a code 43 would cause this. The knock sensor is screwed into the block near the freeze plugs. It's probably on the rear side of engine up between the transmission single wire plug to it. It senses a knock condition and the ECM will retard the timing until it doesn't hear the knock any more. I would start with a fuel pressure test. It could possibly ba a fuel regulator problem. Also could be ignition related, module or crank sensor.
