Mazda Slips Out Of Gear

Q. Hello, I am a 23 year old collage student and I have a problem with my car. I have a 1989 Mazda 323, automatic transmission with over drive. It has 150,000 miles on it. It doesn't have anything fancy like cruise control, just a basic model.

Whenever I reach about third gear it slips into neutral. Could this be because of a dirty air filter or something much more serious. I have gotten the fluid checked and they said it was full. I would appreciate any information or advice. I really don't know a thing about cars.

Thank you,
Jaclynn

A. I highly doubt the air filter has anything to do with your problem. The problem is inside the transmission itself. One thing you can try is to have a transmission fluid and filter change and see if that helps. Sometimes the transmission filter gets partially clogged causing the symptoms you describe. If the service doesn't help, then you will need a transmission shop to diagnose the problem for you.
