Questions and Answers

Chevy Malibu DTC P0172, P0440, P0442

Q. Hello Vincent, Please help! I had my OBD scanned today and it revealed the following fault codes:

  • P0172 Fuel Trim System Rich Bank 1
  • P0440 Evaporative Emission Control System
  • P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)
Chevy Malibu DTC P0172, P0440, P0442

I was just wondering if this was urgent, and if I should get the car serviced immediately, or if I could wait until later. The dealer recommended an O2 sensor change, but they also charged me $110.00 just for the scan, so I'm not sure if I can trust them. Here are some of my car details.

  • 1998 Chevy Malibu
  • 3.1 liter V-6
  • Automatic transmission
  • 101,840 kilometers

Thank you for your help!

A. These codes mean your car is emitting excessive emissions. A rich code can lead to a overheated catalytic convertor which is big money. The EVAP codes can mean anything from a loose or defective gas cap to a leak somewhere in the sealed system of the fuel tank/EVAP canister. You should get them fixed.
