Honda Accord Stuck In First Gear Q. Hello, my name is Evette and I'm having transmission problems and don't know how to go about troubleshooting the problem so I can have my boyfriend try fixing it. I have 1989 Honda Accord lxi, 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine and automatic transmission. I'm having problems where it doesn't want to shift gears it stays in first gear. It just idles high. Any suggestions? Thank you, Evette

A. You didn't mention the milage but I'm sure it's high. At this point all you can do is drop the transmission pan and replace the transmission filter and fluid. Don't get a flush, just replace whatever fluid comes out.

Hopefully that will fix it, but don't count on it. I think the transmission is gone.
