Sundance Fuel Pump
Q. I have a 1991 Plymouth Sundance that I believe has a fuel pump problem. Would I have an electric fuel pump or a mechanical fuel pump? Or is there any difference? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I have no clue about cars!
Thanks in advance,
KimA. Kim, the only dumb question is the question that wasn't asked. No one every learned anything by not asking questions. So any question you may have you can always ask here.
In your car you have an electric fuel pump that is located inside the fuel tank. Briefly, the fuel pump is a submersible pump with a permanent magnet electric motor. Fuel enters the pump inlet tube after passing through a sock style filter and is pushed through the pump by the motor to the outlet. Voltage to the pump is supplied through the Auto Shut Down (ASD) relay. The pump contains a single check valve on the output side which restricts fuel movement in either direction, maintaining fuel system pressure between 14 psi to 39 psi (depending on the injection system type) when the pump is not operating.
Electric fuel pumps are used on fuel injected vehicles which require higher fuel pressures that a mechanical fuel pump can not deliver. Mechanical fuel pumps are used in cars that are equipped with carburetors that require much lower fuel pressures.
