Accord Transmission Swap

Q. Hey there. 1986 Honda Accord, 4 cylinder, automatic transmission, 232,000 kilometers. Now, just a quick question: We are looking to replace the transmission but are unable to find a used 1986 Accord transmission anywhere. We can, however, find 1986 Honda Prelude Automatic Transmissions. We have been hearing differing opinions as to whether or not this transmission will be compatible. What is your take?

Thanks so much,
Glenda

Accord Transmission Swap

A. The 1986 Honda Accord used a model F4 automatic transmission. The only other Honda that used the model F4 automatic transmission is the 1985, 1986 and 1987 Honda Prelude with Fuel Injection. The carburetored Honda Preludes for those years used a model AS automatic transmission.

So yes, it will fit provided the car it came out of was fuel injected.
