Ford Explorer Ready To Rumble

Q. I have a 1991 Ford Explorer which vibrates (actually more of a rumbling noise) when driving over 55 mph (in overdrive). This is normal driving, not 4 wheel drive. Tires were high speed balanced and new universal joints were installed in rear drive shaft. Could it be the Torque Converter?

Thank you,
Patty

Ford Explorer Ready To Rumble

A. Noises are tough for me to diagnose in this venue. I really have to hear it to make some kind of educated guess. I guess the torque converter can make a rumbling type noise. Although they usually don't make any sounds when they go bad. You can check the torque converter bolts to be sure they are tight. While you're at it you can look at the flywheel to see if there are any cracks in it.

The best thing would be to have a mechanic drive it and give a first hand opinion as to what it might be.
