Drowned Toyota
Q. I have learned a lot on your web site. Thank you. I have a 1986 Toyota 4x4 pickup. man trans, 200,600 miles on it. with a 22-RE injected engine. My question is I'm getting no fuel to the cylinders.
My cold start injector is firing fuel but the four main ones are not. No fuses are blown and the fuel filter is new. The fuel pump is putting out enough pressure. It will start and idle for 5 seconds then just die. In that five seconds if I hit the gas it dies right away.
It also will not run long enough to check if code pops up. The check engine light did not come on either. The truck was also in water to the floor boards. I had no problems like this before the water. It ran after and for two days after. But in the two days after a couple of times it would almost die and I would floor it and recover the rpms to normal. Also the spark and timing are right on the money.
Thank you for your time
EricA. You can check for codes by flipping up the cover on the diagnostic check connector under the hood. You'll see the terminal designations on the underside of the cover, connect terminals T1 and E1 and turn on the ignition, the light will blink the code.
I'd say you have a bit of a job ahead of you, most probably water in a connector somewhere. If water did not go up to the level of the fuse block in the kick panel, I would confine the search to the under hood area. You didn't state the circumstances but if you were 4wheeling and entered deep water with the engine running that means the fan was running in water and gave the engine a heavy bath.
I would start by checking the air flow meter to see if water entered it, check the connector for it also and blow out any moisture. Remove the distributor cap and check for moisture along with it's connectors. You're going to have to do this for almost every connector under the hood until you find the offending one. I don't see any short cuts here, sorry.
