Did She Break My Starter?

Q. Ok, here's the problem, I have an 1989 5-speed Chevy Cavalier. My roommate, who doesn't know how to drive a stick, took my car, and now it won't start. At first we thought it was the battery, but after trying to jump it, we figured that we could pop the clutch to start it, that worked.

Now I'm wondering if it is either the starter or the solenoid. The car makes a clicking sound, and tries to turn over, but won't. If it is one of these, did she do it by not knowing how to drive a stick? Is it possible for her to break a starter, I thought those just went out?

Thanks for the advice.

A. I seriously doubt she broke the starter. Once the car starts, the starter just goes along for the ride. If it clicks and turns over slowly then the chances are the starter is just worn out. If it won't start with a jump, that eliminates a bad battery and since you can pop the clutch to get it started, then everything else is okay.
