Mitsubishi Galant Tire Size Concerns

Q. Hi Vincent, I find your articles very helpful. However, recently I'm trying to find and answer to a question in your site but unfortunately I didn't find any. So I decided to write you an e-mail. I have an old model car, it's a 1985 Mitsubishi Galant GL and I am just the second owner of it. Upon much research I found out that the OEM tire specs is 185/60R14. When I got the car it is fitted with 195/50R15.

Mitsubishi Galant Tire Size Concerns

I figure that's okay because it retains the same wheel diameter. However, the body was lowered an inch from the original height. Now I am planning to replace the tires with either 195/55R15 or 195/60R15. What will the effects be on the ride quality, performance and fuel consumption?

Another thing, I'm planning to replace the tires two at a time. Since my current front tires are still thick I am thinking of replacing the rear tires first. What would be the effect if my rear tires have a larger profile than the front tires? Thank you and I look forward from receiving a reply from you.

Sincerely,
Cliff

A. I have a tire expert in my Forum that I defer all the tire questions to. He knows, by far, a lot more about tires than I do and is able to help better than I.

Post this question in the Tire Questions Only! folder and he will answer within a day or two.
