Honda Accord Idles Rough And Shakes

Q. My question is about the car idling rough. I just purchased the car and drove it home, 1000 miles.

  • 1990 Honda Accord
  • 2.2 liter SOHC 4 cylinder
  • Automatic transmission
  • 148,000 miles
  • Fuel Injection
  • P/S, A/C, Cruise control
Honda Accord Idles Rough And Shakes

About 850 miles into the trip I noticed that when stopping and as the car idled at stop signs it was idling rough, shaking a little and it felt like it would stall if I didn't shift it into neutral and rev the engine a little. It seems to run fine at highway speeds but I think it should have a little more power, although I am not sure since I don't have much history with it.

Now it starts difficult, it fires and stalls but will start after a few attempts. Prior, and during most of, the trip it started fine and just about immediately after turning the key, it also idled fine accept in Reverse when it would shake when holding the brake, it would be fine when you gave it some gas and backed up. Any thoughts??

Thanks,
Sean

A. This problem could be caused by a lot of things, from a clogged fuel filter to a bad transmission.

Since you just purchased it, I would suggest giving it a good tune-up, including new spark plugs (NGK ZFR5F-11 gapped to 0.039" to 0.043", spark plug wires, distributor cap, distributor rotor, air filter and fuel filter. And with the milage, I would recommend a throttle body cleaning. Cleaning Throttle Bodies

While you are at it, an oil and oil filter change might not be a bad idea. Do you know when the timing belt was last replaced?

This, by itself, could very well fix the problem. If it doesn't, we will, at least, have a solid foundation for further troubleshooting.
