Nissan Thermostat

Q. Dear Vince, I received good advice from you so I just kept coming back for more. I still have the 1990 Nissan pick up truck, four cylinder, KA24E engine, 138,000 miles. The Chilton repair manual shows that the thermostat must position with the jiggle valve (air relief) facing up.

What type of problems the may thermostat cause if the jiggle valve is positioned facing down. I am just curious if the position of the thermostat may affect the coolant from the reservoir not flowing back to the radiator.

Thanks.

A. I can't say for sure if it would effect the flow of coolant back and forth to the coolant recovery tank, but it is possible. At any rate the valve needs to be in the up position for the cooling system to operate correctly.

It is easy enough to check, just install a thermostat with an air relief valve in the proper position and see if the flow between tank and engine is restored. If not, then I still feel there is an opening in the system that is allowing air to enter the cooling system when it cools off.
