Toyota Camry High Idle
Q. Hello sir, I have written to you in the past and you were very helpful in solving my car problems before. I have a 1992 Toyota Camry with a 2.2 liter (5S-FE) engine. It is an automatic with cruise control and air conditioning. My problem is that when I bought the car the idle was at about 1500 rpm.
I tried without success to find the idle adjust screw. When I did not find it I tried to adjust the idle with the throttle stop screw. This brought down the rpm but the car vibrates horribly but maintains a steady rpm as it always did. I would like to know where the proper idle adjuster is located. As a side note I did check my PCV, EGR, and engine mounts and all seem fine. I also did change the plugs, distributor cap and rotor.
I am well aware that it may really be the mounts or spark plug wires, but the wires are about $100.00 and the mounts come up to about $350.00. I do't want to keep throwing the wrong parts at it until I come up with the right fix. As I said before it may have to do with how the idle should be adjusted properly. I am at a loss.
Thank you,
AdrianA. There is no idle speed adjustment on that engine. The ECM receives input from various sensors and controls idle speed through the idle air control valve. The IAC Valve provides an air bypass around the throttle valve with an electric motor that rotates a flap in the air passage. The IAC Valve has battery voltage applied to it and grounds back through the ECM via terminals ISCC and ISCV.
The problem, then, is most likely with the IACV or the IACV circuit. You can try pulling the codes from the computer and see if they confirm this.
