Intrepid Check Engine Light

Q. Vincent, I have a 1997 Dodge Intrepid SE, 3.5 engine, Autostick, 72,500 miles and fuel injected. Anyways my problem is that the car acts as if it's not getting enough gas to it. The check engine light is on too. It stalls when you slow down, or come to a stop or when first starting it. Please help me with this.

Thank you!!!
Dawn

A. There are many things that can turn the Check Engine Light (MIL) on. You need to access the codes in the computer to find out what codes were set and that will give us a starting point for diagnosis.

To access the codes:

  1. Turn ignition switch ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON in less than 5 seconds.

  2. Count the number of times the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (previously called Check Engine Lamp) on the instrument panel flashes ON and off.

    • The Flashes will be separated by short or long pauses.

    • A short pause indicates the change from first to second digit, for each code.

    • A slightly longer pause indicates next code.

  3. Code 55 indicates the end of test.

For Example: a flash followed by a pause then 2 flashes followed by a longer pause indicates a code 12. FLASH........FLASH...FLASH........

Once you have the code numbers, let me know and I will tell you what they are.
