Chrysler LeBaron Shifting Problem
Q. The problem I am having, is that every time I start my car, it takes it a good 5 to 7 minutes of regular driving to get into third gear. Once it is there, it doesn't have a problem going back to it. It's been that way since I got the car 41,000 miles ago, but it's been doing it in warm weather now too. The cruise still works, and someone told me that I need the transmission overhauled.
One interesting note is that if I have to take a sharp turn, like to avoid something, the transmission will slip into third gear under that 5 minute normal limit, and act fine. it never shakes or pulls, and it still gets great gas mileage. There are no noises, no slips, no sticks and no kills.
The transmission fluid, however, has never been changed. I got it with around 82,000 miles on it, and was hesitant to change the fluid for fear of loosening cracked or worn seals that may depend on that dirty fluid to hold it together. Any thoughts on how to go about this the best and cheapest way?

Since the transmission fluid has never been changes, it is probably safe to assume the transmission filter has never been changed. I think I would go ahead and drop the transmission pan and replace the transmission filter. Then replace whatever fluid came out. I think that will fix the problem with little risk of complications. I would also recommend getting the transmission fluid from a Chrysler Dealer. It often does make a difference.
