Quest Manifold Bolts
Q. Dear Mr. Ciulla, I own a 1993 Nissan Quest with 148,000 miles. It has been a great vehicle. About two years ago, I had bolts replaced on the front exhaust manifold, and the manifold was worked on. Now I have broken bolts again on the front and on the back exhaust manifolds.
Originally the Nissan dealer said the manifold had warped, causing the bolts to break. Our new mechanic says the same thing, and says the cause may be an engine that runs too hot. The temperature gauge in the car shows the engine to be below normal. I would like to repair and keep the car, but not if this is a problem to be fixed every two years. Do you know a possible cause?
Thanks,
PamA. There is hope Pam, so don't get the "For Sale" sign out yet..
Nissan issued a TSB, number EM94-002, issued April 14, 1994 on this problem. It's not just because of the manifold itself, it's the bolts themselves that are not up to the job. The new studs are P/N 14065-V5003 and should be installed to prevent this problem from happening again. The exhaust manifolds and gaskets need to be replaced as well with P/N 14002-0B010 for the right side and 14002-0B000 for the left side with exhaust manifold gasket P/N 14037-V5000 for both sides. The new stud nuts should be torqued to 30 foot pounds.
