Nissan Maxima Brakes Squealing
Q. Mr. Ciulla, I have a 1994 Nissan Maxima, No ABS, drums in the rear, pads in front, approximately 70,000 miles and owned the car for three years. When I'm braking, usually at slow speeds, or after braking from faster speeds down in the 10-15 mph range, I hear some noise from the drums like a gripping grab sound.
From the front brakes I hear a screech. All those noises where there before I changed all the brakes and after. As for the rear drums I had them shaved down after I changed the brakes because I thought that was the next logical choice. I still have the noise. Just wondering what your advise is next? I'm stumped and would appreciate the help.

A. If it is a squeak/squeal type brake noise, the problem is probably the brake shoes and pads themselves. Aftermarket brake pads have a high metal content, especially "Lifetime" brake pads. This metal along with normal brake dust is what causes the noise.
Non-asbestos organic (NAO) front brake pads and rear brake shoes have been developed for the Maxima (J30). These pads and shoes are effective in reducing squeak/squeal type brake noises.
In any event, the best thing to do is to let a mechanic listen to the noise and make a much better diagnosis than I can in this venue.
