Cherokee Won't Shift Out Of Park
Q. I have had trouble recently with being able to shift out of Park. I can start the car as long as it is in Park or Neutral but, if the car is in park, it will not allow me to shift out of Park. I have to turn the key half way, shift into neutral, and then start the car.
I have looked through several guides, web sites, etc but have yet to figure out what part might be wrong or what it might even be called.

JoelA. My answer would depend on if you have the Shift Interlock system or not. There was a safety improvement Recall 97I002000 to install the Shift Interlock system. Since you did not mention having to step on the brake to shift out of Park I'm going to assume you do not have the Shift Interlock system installed. If that is indeed the case, then you need to go to the dealer to have it installed.
