Sentra Makes Noise When Turning
Q. Hi. I've got a 1986 Nissan Sentra, 1.6 liter California, automatic, carburetor, with 110,000 miles. Lately, when making right turns and then letting the steering straighten back out I hear a weird thunking noise from the front end. I be suspicious about the CV joints (and I am anyway...) except for when I first got the car, four months ago, the mechanic who tuned it up noticed "worn CV boots" and recommended changing the whole "front axle assembly" because it would be cheaper, which is what I did.
What do you think it might be? And, what do you think it might cost to fix? I live in Brooklyn, NY.
Thanks,
CarolineA. It could be the CV joints. If the boot rips and the grease leaks out, they can wear out quickly. Now I know the City of New York keeps all their roads in pristine condition so there couldn't be any possibility it's due to the roads. No one guarantees the boots because you can put them on today and they can be ripped tomorrow.
So I would check the boots and if they are not the problem then it could be the front strut tops. There is a bearing in there that can seize up and cause a noise when turning the wheels.
Hey Caroline, is the BQE still eating Volkswagens?
