4-Runner Starter
Q. Hello Vincent, I just joined the forum and I'm finding it very useful. I recently purchased a 1989 Toyota 4-Runner and went out to crank it yesterday and got one single "click", which I'm still getting. I'm thinking it's the starter, but was wondering if there are any troubleshooting techniques to pin point the problem.
Also, is the starter for the 1989 4-Runner located on the passenger side right under the hood, easily accessible?
Any input is appreciated, thanks!
A. Unplug the small connector at the starter and, with a test light, see if you have power there when the key is in the START position. If you do, then the starter/solenoid assembly is bad. If there is no power there with the key in the start position, then the problem is in the starting circuit. But if you hear a click when you go to start it. chances are it's the starter.
The starter in the four cylinder is a piece of cake from underneath the truck. Two wires and two bolts and it's out. The starter in the V-6 is a little tougher requiring removing the transmission dipstick tube, among other things.
