Chevy Silverado Running Cold

Q. Vincent, My truck has a problem! It's a 1995 Chevy Silverado Z-71 4X4. I noticed that the temperature gauge on the dash is running cooler than normal. It has been reading just over 100° were it used to be 180°. I just thought it was the gauge. Then I started to use the heater and there is only warm air coming out not hot.

What could be causing both of these to occur?

Thanks for any help,
Brent

A. When it's cooled off, open hood and check the reservoir. It will probably be empty. Then open the radiator cap. It will most likely be low as well. These systems have had problems with leaks in the "quick connect" fittings at the intake manifold. Just follow the heater hoses to the engine. If you see corrosion at a fitting, it's leaking. Also could have a leak at the intake manifold gasket too. Bottom line is to check coolant level and if it's low, pressure test the system to find any leaks. If it's full, try a new thermostat.
