Engine Swap

Q. I have an 1987 multi port fuel inj. 1.8 turbo. I replaced the engine with a 1993 Subaru Loyal 1.8 single port fuel inj. non turbo. The wiring harness is different is there one I can buy that will work?

Thanks,
Doug

A. Oh Doug, what a can of worms you opened!! The base engine may be the same, but by the time you convert the 1987 electrical system to a 1993 electrical system, you could buy a new car.

When you say single port fuel injection, I assume you mean throttle body injection, although I thought by 1993 everyone went with multi port.

Okay, let's look at this closely. You're going to need a wiring harness, that you can only get from Subaru. Cost: about $800.00. Okay, now you have the harness, now you need a new computer. Cost: about $900.00. Maybe you can get a used one for about $400.00. Throw in a set of injectors and a few other odds and ends and you have another $250.00 to $300.00. What I would do is take everything off the replacement engine and just use the base engine itself. Transfer all the parts from the old one to the new one and you won't need to spend a fortune to get the replacement engine to work.
