240-SX Transmission Failure

Q. Problem: Engine starts and runs but transmission does not engage in any selector position.

Tried up to this point.

  1. Engine only starts in Park and Neutral and reverse light do come on (inhibitor switch).
  2. Dropped pan and confirmed shift movement into valve body. (linkage).
  3. Transmission fluid red and not burnt (no bad smell).
  4. No engage at any rpm.
  5. Slight RPM change with shifter movement without pressing brake (no engagement).
240-SX Transmission Failure
  • Can line pressure solenoid cause complete failure?
  • Can A/T control cause complete failure?
  • Can inhibitor relay cause complete failure?

1990 Nissan 240-SX
2.0 liter 4 cylinder
Automatic transmission

Transmission rebuilt 3,000 back. (So I'm told)

A. Can line pressure solenoid cause complete failure? Yes.

Can A/T control cause complete failure? No. A bad A/T control unit will just let the automatic transmission shift as a normal transmission.

Can inhibitor relay cause complete failure? No.

There are very few cause for total automatic transmission failure and they are all fluid pressure related. Damaged internal parts will prevent movement in, say for example, Drive, but you would still have reverse.

I also want to say I am sorry for your loss. I too know what it's like to lose a son.
