Fluctuating Ford Ranger

Q. I have a 1993 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0 liter V-6, manual transmission, 79,000 miles and fuel injected, ABS brakes on rear. Whenever the car is at rest or in neutral, the idle is rough. I have a tachometer installed and after I felt the shudders of the rough idle I would look at the RPM. As it idles, it fluctuates from 800 to 1100.

I own a 2002 Chevy Impala and a 1995 Ford Taurus and they don't idle like this at all. What can I do to fix this?

A. Two things could cause this idle fluctuation. There could be a vacuum leak or the Idle Speed Control Valve (ISCV) is dirty or bad. You can pop the ISCV out and give it a good cleaning along with the passages in the intake. This usually takes care of the problem.
