Dying Camero

Q. I have a 1983 Chevrolet Camaro. Its a V-8 automatic with 49,000 miles. A/C, P/S but no ABS. Sometimes my engine dies (usually when going up a hill) on me and won't start up until it sits for a while. I have had it towed but the mechanic couldn't make the engine die for him.

The car has sat in a garage for a while and was only driven every once in a while. Could it be the gas pump? What should I try and do to determine the problem?

A. This should be a carburetted fuel system. When it dies, you need to remove the air cleaner and pump the gas pedal while checking for fuel being squirted inside the carburetor. If you have fuel, you need to check for spark at a plug. Possible fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, bad ignition coil or module.
