Aerostar Gas Gauge

Q. I have a 1990 Ford Aerostar with about 90,000 miles - 4.0 V-6, 4 speed automatic. Recently the gas gauge started acting up. With about ¾ a tank of gas in it, the gauge will move from full to about ¼ tank and back to full.

I know how to troubleshoot sending unit/gas gauge on 1960's era Fords. What can I do on my Aerostar to determine whether it is the gauge or the sending unit?

Thanks,
Tom

A. The problem is most likely the Fuel Pump/Sender unit. Ford had a problem with them in 1989 to 1990 cars and trucks. The countermeasure Fuel Pump/Sender is:

1989-1990 Aerostar
Fuel Pump/Sender
E99Z-9H307-A
