Safari Wipers Act Funny

Q. I have a 1994 GMC Safari minivan, 4.3 liter 6 cylinder, all wheel drive. Recently, the wipers have started to act funny. When I turn them on with either the delayed timer or slow or fast, they won't shut off when turned off. Sometimes they will continue to run 7 or 8 more swipes before turning off.

It used to be that when they would finally turn off, they would stop properly, at the bottom of the windshield. Now they stop sometimes in the middle of the window or wherever they want to stop. Is the switch going bad, or the motor? Also, I have replaced a wiper motor before but never a switch. If it is the switch, is this a do it yourself job or leave it to the experts. I appreciate any help you can give me. Luckily, they still work, just not the way they are supposed to.

Thanks,
Aaron

A. This would be a hard one to call without doing some testing. But on the bright side you have a 50 - 50 chance of replacing the right part. Here's a test you can do to help determine which it is.

Turn key to the run. Connect a test light to a good ground and check for power at the white wire at the wiper motor. Test Light lights. Go to next test.
Test Light doesn't light. Locate and repair open in white wire from wiper motor to the fuse block.
Connect a test light to a good ground and check for power at the pink wire at the wiper motor. Test Light lights. Replace wiper switch.
Test Light doesn't light. Replace wiper motor.
