Found On Road Dead

Q. My daughter was on the freeway and the car just stopped running. She said it felt like it ran out of gas, although the tank is almost full. She said she did not feel or hear anything unusual. What's most likely - timing belt, gas filter, ???

A. There are many things that could cause a car's engine to stop. But based on the observation that it felt like it ran out of gas I'd look at the fuel pump. A clogged fuel filter would be a gradual thing. You'd notice something before it clogged to the point where the car wouldn't run any more.

The first thing you would need to do is narrow things down a little. Check to see if there's spark. If there's good spark, then you need to look at the fuel system. If there isn't any spark, then a timing belt or an ignition system componenet is bad, possibly the distributor cap and rotor.
