Volkswagen Passat Flashing ABS Lights

Q. Hi, I drive 1999 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8 liter and automatic transmission. Mileage is about 63,000 miles. Both front and rear brakes were changed at around 35,000 to 40,000 miles. While I am driving, I sometimes get this ABS light as well as a flashing BRAKE light. Both solid ABS and flashing BRAKE light come on together.

Sometimes they go away, but other times they are on all the time while I am driving. These lights are coming on more frequently lately. I would like to know what the problem could be. How can I troubleshoot what the problem really is? What are the possible root causes?

Thanks in advance for your help!

A. Those lights indicate the ABS Control Module has detected a fault i the ABS system. Unfortunately Volkswagen does not provide a procedure for accessing these codes without a scan tool.

Before taking it to a Volkswagen dealer I would check the connectors for the speed sensors at each wheel to see if any are disconnected or damaged.
