Blazer Fuel Gauge

Q. Hello, Mr. Ciulla, My problem lies within the fuel gauge of a 1997 Chevy Blazer LS. The needle jumps around like crazy, spending more time near empty. It does this no matter how much fuel is in the tank. Does this sound like the float or the sending unit? Are either of these problems difficult to repair?

Thanks,
Vickki

A. The float is part of the sending unit. When the float moves up and down, it moves a slider on the sending unit that senses where the float is and by that knows how much fuel is in the tank.

To replace the sending unit the fuel tank will have to come out.
