Caravan Won't Idle

Q. I have a 1989 Dodge Caravan. It has a 6 cylinder 3.0 fuel injected motor, automatic transmission, about 113,000 miles, no ABS, but it does have power steering air and cruise. Now the problem I am having is it won't stay idling. It does use some oil and it was doing this on and off before but always seem to clear up.

But now it seems the problem is here to stay. It starts right up if you push on the gas pedal but otherwise it will not even start hot or cold. It runs just fine as long as I keep my foot on the gas pedal, I can go anywhere. I would appreciate any help you can give me with this problem. I Have had people tell me it may be a fuel filter, but I really don't know anything about cars.

Thanks for your time,
James

A. It sounds to me like you have a bad or stuck Idle Air Control Valve (IACV). I would suggest taking it to a shop and have them test it for replacement or cleaning.
