Chrysler Sebring Engine Transplant

Q. I have a 1996 Chrysler Sebring convertible 2.5 liter V-6 automatic transmission, ABS, 130,000 miles. I recently replaced the engine with one from a 1997 Sebring convertible. After my car ran for a few minutes at the shop and cut off, the mechanic advised me that I needed a new distributor.

I purchased it but my car still didn't run. Then he said I needed a PCM. He replaced it and had the car reprogrammed, but still won't get any fire. When placed on the machine it reads to crankshaft sensor, even though he said he replaced it, and charged me extra. Any idea what may be causing this problem?

A. I don't know the exact code he got, but just because a code points to a particular item does not mean that the item is bad. In this case it's pointing to a Crankshaft Position Sensor, but the problem could very well be in the wiring.

Also the PCM for the 1996 Chrysler Sebring Convertible is different from the 1997 Chrysler Sebring Convertible. If you are using the PCM for a 1996 Chrysler Sebring Convertible that could be a problem for you.
