Sluggish Ford Mustang

Q. Hi Vince, I was wondering if you could help me out. My wife has a 1988 Ford Mustang 2.3 litre standard 5 speed. Sometimes when you leave a light it just goes great other times it is very sluggish. What would cause that? It has a new timing belt a new air speed control motor.

Thanks,
Matt

A. Port fuel injected vehicles that have hesitation, lack of power, rough engine idle or a surging condition at steady speeds may be caused by dirty fuel injectors. When no-detergent fuel is used, deposits form on the fuel metering surfaces of the fuel injectors. The deposits that form reduce the fuel flow resulting in a lean condition. So a fuel injector cleaning may solve the problem.

I would also check the basics, spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Also the air and fuel filters. If its been a while since the last tune-up, just go ahead and replace these items. That in itself could correct the problem.
