Mercury Sable Fuel Guage
Q. First thank you for your help on the Plymouth, it was the timing belt. Seem to be running fine now. Second when you get a chance, I like to know before I take the Sable to be looked at two things:
- Looking at the instrument cluster driver side, the engine symbol that lights up, and supposed to go out after refueling with high test gas for four to five fill-ups is not. Is there additives for the gas to make the light go out? Should I being using only 87 Octane or better??
- The gas gauge about every other week indicates FULL even when there is not but ¼ tank. Is this a float that might be hanging up?
- 2001 Mercury Sable
- Vulcan Engine V-6
- Automatic transmission
- 46,000 miles
- ABS
- P/S, A/C Cruise Control
Again thanks for the help on the Plymouth.
LawrenceA. If the engine light you are referring to looks like this...
![]()
you are seeing the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). This light is telling you the computer has detected a fault in the engine control system and has stored a Diagnostic Trouble Code. When this light is on, you should take it in to be checked out.
As for the grade of fuel you should use, that information is in the owners manual. For most cars it is 87 octane.
If you unplug the round connector at the fuel tank, the fuel gauge should go to EMPTY. If you ground the yellow/white wire the fuel gauge should go to FULL> if it does, the fuel gauge is good and the fuel sending unit inside the fuel tank is bad.
