Wandering Astro Van
Q. I have a 1997 Chevy Astro Van with 85,000 miles, all wheel drive, 4.3 liter V-6, automatic transmission. The problem is that when driving the van, the front end seems to wander even though the steering wheel is straight.
I just recently had new tires put on, and a front end alignment done. Could this be an indication of a serious front end problem, or maybe just an alignment problem? I have owned a 1990 GMC Safari van in the past, but never noticed this type of problem in the steering. Also, could this have anything to do with the all wheel drive part of the van?
Thanks again,
Jeff T.A. Have you taken it back to the alignment shop? You may have loose ball joints, or idler arms. It is possible that the AWD is giving you a different "feel" of the road. If all else fails, you could try removing the front drive shaft and driving it to see if anything changes.
