Volkswagen Cabriolet Dying Warm

Q. I have a 1988 Volkswagen Cabriolet. Nice car runs but have a problem with it dying once the engine gets warm. Water temperature is normal. Got good oil pressure but oil temperature is a little high. But my REAL problem is the fuel pressure regulator. If I unplug it the car runs fine. Oh yeah, it is CIS injection not too much to it but why is it dying when warm????? Please help!

Thank you,
Damian

Volkswagen Cabriolet Dying Warm

A. When you disconnect the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) you are enriching the fuel mixture. So it would seem you have a lean condition that unplugging the FPR is compensating for.

The lean condition can be caused by a vacuum leak, clogged injectors, bad O2 Sensor or a Fuel Distributor out of adjustment. A fuel pressure test would be a good thing to do as well to make sure the fuel pumps are supplying the correct fuel pressure. System fuel pressure should be between 5.2 to 5.6 bar (75 to 81 psi).
