Windstar Power Steering Rack

Q. I have a 1999 Ford Windstar 3.8 liter engine with 39,000 miles. Coming off the highway about one mile from my house, I knew I had a problem. Squealing noise when I turned the wheel that was getting progressively louder. Sure enough, power steering fluid low. Added more. Drove car about 6 miles.

Next day. Power steering fluid low. I brought to the dealer thinking there was just a leak somewhere. Of course it was worse than that. Right now they are replacing the rack and pinion steering to the tune of $850.00. My questions - is this normal? Replacing rack and pinion on a car with only 39,000 miles? And is that price reasonable? (Husband is of course out of town.)

Thanks,
Donna

A. A new Ford Power steering rack lists for about $300.00 and about 3.5 hours to replace it and another hour to set the toe. So if the Dealer charged you $120.00 an hour labor, they are in the ballpark.

I would expect the rack to have lasted a little bit longer than it did before leaking. It is common for P/S racks to leak, but usually it's just a slow drip. It sounds like yours was leaking pretty good.

I would call Ford Customer Service, the number is in your owners manual and file a complaint with them. They will set up an appointment with the factory representative and he may help you out with the repairs. Be sure to bring your service records to document the maintenance.
